Adult Speech and Language Therapy Services in Northern Ireland

Suzanne Turner speech and language therapist Northern Ireland adult communication therapy

At NI Private Speech Therapy, I provide specialist assessment and therapy for adults experiencing communication difficulties following brain injury, stroke, or neurological conditions.

I support individuals with aphasia, dysarthria, and cognitive-communication difficulties, focusing on rebuilding confidence, independence, and meaningful participation in everyday life.

My approach is person-centred, neuro-affirming and goal-led, recognising that communication is about connection, identity and quality of life — not just speech.

Support is tailored to each individual and delivered in real-life settings, including at home, online or within community venues across Northern Ireland, including Larne, Carrickfergus, Antrim, Newtownabbey, Ballymena and surrounding areas.

Who this service is for

This service may be helpful if you or your family member:

  • Has experienced a stroke or brain injury (ABI / TBI)

  • Has difficulty finding words or expressing thoughts (aphasia)

  • Has slurred or unclear speech (dysarthria)

  • Experiences changes in communication, memory or processing (cognitive communication difficulties)

  • Feels less confident in conversations or avoids speaking situations

Please note: I do not provide assessment or therapy for dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), stammering (fluency), or voice disorders.

Appointments and Fees

Free Initial Telephone Consultation

A brief telephone discussion (approximately 20 minutes) to explore your concerns, answer any questions, and discuss whether speech and language therapy may be appropriate.

Fee: Free

Initial Assessment

The initial assessment is tailored to your individual needs and aims to develop a thorough understanding of your communication strengths, areas of difficulty, and how these are affecting your everyday life.

Assessment appointments are charged at the standard session fee of £85.

The assessment process may include:

  • Discussion of your concerns, priorities and goals

  • Relevant medical, educational and occupational history

  • Functional cognitive-communication assessment

  • Informal and/or standardised assessment where appropriate

  • Clinical analysis and interpretation

  • Feedback and recommendations

  • A written report, where agreed

Every individual is different. While many assessments can be completed within a single appointment, some people benefit from the assessment being completed over more than one appointment. This may be recommended where additional assessment time is needed, particularly where fatigue, cognitive endurance or the complexity of the presentation may affect assessment findings.

Assessment is guided by clinical need rather than a fixed timeframe.

Where additional assessment appointments are clinically indicated, each appointment is charged at the standard session fee. There is no separate assessment surcharge.

There is no obligation to continue with therapy following the assessment.

Travel & Home Visits

Home visits within a 20-mile radius of Larne (BT40 2UP) are included within the standard session fee. Travel beyond this area is subject to a distance-based travel charge. Any applicable charge will be confirmed before your appointment is booked.

I use a combination of functional, real-life assessment and targeted tasks where appropriate.

Many clients I support have already completed formal assessments within health services. My approach focuses on understanding how communication works in everyday life and identifying what will make the most meaningful difference.

This allows me to develop therapy that is practical, relevant and tailored to individual goals.
